In the chapter 6, the author introduced
genetically modified (GM) technology. This is a new agricultural technology and
it can a possibility to keep the natural resources and decrease the number of starvation
victims, so the poor farmers in developing countries have been using this way.
It can be possible to make a large amount
of products at relatively low cost. In developing countries, there are many
starvation victims, so it will be useful for these countries.
And recently, the number of international agricultural
search centers has been increasing in the world, according to this book.
So, in the future, this agricultural method
will spread more and more in the world particularly in developing countries.
A few days ago I watched a documentary about Monsanto (a US-based multinational company that's one of the biggest producers of GM agricultural technology) and learned a lot about the dark side of GMO products. For a company to make a kind of soy bean that is resistant to a strong weed killer that it also happens to produce (called "Round-up") seems self-serving and not something that benefits consumers or farmers as much as it provides profits for the company. You can see the whole video for yourself when you have time at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-world-according-to-monsanto/ .
返信削除There are hidden environmental costs to growing the sorts of soy beans that Monsanto produces and it has led to mono crops in parts of the world where they're grown, not allowing local farmers to feed themselves with the rich variety of fruits and vegetables they need for subsistence. This is not to mention the unproven long-term consequences of consuming GMO products. We are all guinea pigs.
While GM produce may be dangerous and unhealthy, it may be better for a lot of people when they have trouble getting their daily bread.
